Surah Al-Ma‟un (the 107th sura, meaning; „Small Kindness) in the Qur‟an is very famous in Muhammadiyah which reminds Muslims not to abandon the orphans and the poor because to do so they are ultimately being a religious deceiver. The good in the world is happiness through the increase of rezqi(sustenance) and feeling. While the goodness in afterlife that Allah promises is the heaven or eternal happiness after death. Based on this encouragement, Muhammadiyah members in various regions in Indonesia are competing to organize social welfare efforts, mainly services. The type of social welfare services that are established are many such as; social protection houses or social institutions to care for orphans and/or poor children. Lazismu and Remaking the Muhammadiyah's New Way of Philantrophy

Zakiyuddin Baidhawy | Abstract | This study is aimed to analyze the new way of philanthropy by special reference to Lembaga Amil Zakat Infak dan Sadaqah Muhammadiyah (Muhammadiyah Philanthropic Board: hereafter Lazismu); explore the measures taken by Lazismu to promote empowerment and social justice movements by combining charity and entrepreneurship; and understand the motive of the new philanthropy movement initiated by Lazismu. Through the ‘third way’ approach and analysis, this study found that: first, Muhammadiyah, as a non-profit social-religious organization, admits its role as an agent of transformation vis-à-vis the State. Lazismu is able to show its flexibility to adapt to new trends in philanthropy. Lazismu is also able to initiate breakthrough in management of Zakat, Infaq, and Sadaqah and move them beyond charity activities to productive and redistributive activities to promote social justice and equity. Second, Lazismu shows creativity and sophisticated programs exceeding the expectations of muzakki (alms payer), benefactor, and donors. Realization of philanthropy programs developed by Lazismu extends from education development, agriculture development, youth entrepreneurship, and women empowerment, to Masjid based community empowerment. Third, Lazismu combines theology of love, generosity, and voluntarism to produce transformative philanthropy that is successful to alter charity oriented generosity to creative and innovative good deeds.

The ‘Other’ Muhammadiyah Movement: Singapore 1958-2008

Syed Muhd Khairudin Aljunied | Abstract | This paper provides a critical historical analysis of the Muhammadiyah movement in Singapore. I argue that four processes have been crucial in the emergence and sustenance of the Muhammadiyah within a predominantly non-Muslim society: the symbiotic relationship between the leaders and their followers, the formulation and subsequent reformulation of the ideology of the movement, political opportunities which were judiciously exploited and the availability of a wide array of infrastructures. The Muhammadiyah, as will be shown, provides an informative example of an Islamic movement in Southeast Asia that has transcended the challenges faced by the minority Muslim population by making effective use of the limited resources at its disposal.

ISLAMIC REVIVAL IN INDONESIA: FROM PURIFICATION OF RELIGION TO SOCIAL INNOVATIONS

Muhammad Rahman | This paper analyses social innovations as an instance of Islamic Revival in Indonesia. It studies the recent development of the Indonesian Muslim modernist movement, Muhammadiyah (established in 1912), especially in responding to the current global modernity - to the extension of nation-state system and the development of world capitalist economy. There have been many researchers studying Islamic Revival, but they not necessarily addressed the experiences of the contemporary Muslims and how the character of today’s highly developed global societies affects the formulation of the revivalism. For instance, there is an increasingly popular phenomenon of young Muslims leaving established Muslim organizations or mosques. They are called ‘Unmosqued’3 . Many of them prefer working in NGOs, joining secular political parties or creating their own start-ups to joining the existing organizations. However, this does not mean that they are leaving Islam and not contributing to the society. Muslims around the world, enabled by the advancement of technology, are creating new solutions to tackle the new social problems.
